Howard John Markve, 76

Howard John Markve, 76, of Silverton, Idaho, passed away surrounded by his beloved daughters, family and friends, on Jan. 25, 2020, at the Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born May 9, 1943, in Waubay, S.D. Howard was the son of Harold and Bergetta (Grotta) Markve.

Howard attended and graduated from Lead High School in Lead, S.D., in 1961. He then proudly served in the U.S. Army.

Howard then moved to the Silver Valley in 1967, after his service in the Army.

Howard married Susan Goos on Oct. 15, 1966, in Butte, Mont.; they later divorced.

Howard served in the mining industry for many years; he was a contract miner, as well as, a blacksmith and machinist. He was the last man out of the mine during the Sunshine Mine fire of 1972 and is the most recent victim of this disaster. Howard later retired from the Sunshine Mining company.

Howard was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Wallace Elks. He loved and enjoyed working in his garage, restoring old cars with his favorite being a 1955 Chevy station wagon, gathering wood and tending to his fruit trees. Howard also enjoyed his favorite Harley and the outdoors.

Howard is survived by two daughters, Wendy and her husband, Troy Ricks of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Deanna and her husband Fred Thompson of Helena, Mont.; three grandchildren, Alexa, Jackson (who both serve in the Idaho Army National Guard, continuing in their grandfather’s footsteps) and Bridger; two brothers, Tom Markve of Indiana and Jim Markve of Illinois; and one sister, Francis Mann of Georgia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold Jr. and David; and two sisters Mary and Helen.

A celebration of Howard’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel in Kellogg, Idaho, with Pastor Bill Howard officiating.
