PINEHURST –– Make it three in a row for team Pinehurst Golf Course, after beating Shoshone Golf Club for the Miller Cup this past weekend.

Led by club champion and Miller Cup MVP, Danny Kenyon, the Pinehurst golfers got the threepeat in a hotly contested battle that featured all sorts of golf drama.

“It’s the Super Bowl for Silver Valley Golfers,” Kenyon said. “We tried to make it more fun and more competitive, and I think we succeeded. It was serious fun.”

PCG’s win put them up 16-14 in the all-time standings for the Cup, which began in 1995 and was sponsored by the Miller Beer Company.

The Miller Cup consists of the 12 best players from both Shoshone and Pinehurst Golf Clubs in two days of six singles matches and three doubles matches each day, with the multiple scoring formats being used to keep things interesting. The defending champions go into the competition with a half point for simply being the defending champs which eliminates any chance for a potential tie.

Day one was played at Shoshone Golf Club in Big Creek, where both teams finished the day deadlocked at 6-6. Day two was just as tight with the team from Big Creek coming up just short on the final holes to give Pinehurst the 12.5 - 11.5 win.

Along with Kenyon, Team PCG featured Hogan Samuelson, Carter Wardwell, Sean Biotti, Taylor Bush, Jaime Edwards, Kirk Nelson, Hank Rauenhorst, Archie Rauenhorst, Chuck Wardwell, Damon Robinson, Chase Jerome, Bryce Martello, Darin Williams, and Dustin Mitchem.

Team Shoshone was captained by Dayne Evenson, and included Taylor Hulstrom, Colin Guhlke, Chad Self, Hunter Gust, Corey Miller, Dustin Christensen, Jordan Cochran, Palmer Guhlke, Trevor Harshman, Hayden Hogamier, Dan Sommerfield, and Chris Stoddard.

Many of these guys play with each other on the two courses throughout the season, which breeds more camaraderie than contention – something that wasn’t lost on Kenyon or the rest of his team after the Cup had been awarded.

“This year’s match was really close,” Kenyon said. “We tried to liven it up this year and I think it worked. I’m sure there are some Shoshone guys who were bummed that they didn’t win, but a lot of them stuck around afterward and partied with us. It was a cool event.”

Along with the trophy and bragging rights, each golfer put in $100 as a friendly wager for the contest, with each winning player going home with an extra hundred bucks.
