WALLACE — Playing their third game in three days, shorthanded, and battling a nasty flu, the Kellogg Wildcats were able to overcome the Wallace Miners 50-32 in the championship game of the Silver Valley Tournament.

Wallace was coming in off a 54-22 drubbing of Potlatch on Friday evening, while the Wildcats were figuratively and literally limping into the championship after a 44-33 win over St. Maries the night prior.

The potential for upset was ripe, but the Wildcats shut that down quickly as they got out to a hot start on the back of their vaunted full-court pressure.

Hailey Cheney, playing through a nasty bout of the flu, continued her string of solid play to open the season as she finished with 13 points in limited minutes against the Miners.

Jaden House played another solid game for Wallace, chipping in 12 points.

“We made it through it,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said following the win. “We haven’t been healthy for a few days and to come out and go 3-0 in three days is huge for us. We know what we need to work on and now we have some time to get healthy and work on those things. Hats off to Wallace, they’re a good team and they are going to give teams some problems this year.”

Kellogg 53, Moscow 34

KELLOGG — Good defense can help offset bad offense, and that was paramount for the Kellogg Wildcats during their season-opening win over visiting Moscow on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Wildcats struggled to move the ball in half court sets, but channeled their inner Showtime by scoring in fastbreak situations.

Junior Hailey Cheney scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the second quarter as Kellogg took a 31-17 lead into the intermission.

Coach Jana Nearing unleashed a devastating press that had the Bears completely flummoxed and allowed the Wildcats to utilized their blazing speed to their advantage.

Lora Allred scored 12 points for Kellogg in its opener.

“Our press forced a lot of turnovers and created some opportunities tonight,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “Lora was instrumental in our press and got a lot of fast-break layups.”
