Kellogg sewer project getting ready to ramp back up
Last week Kellogg mayor Mac Pooler discussed the upcoming Phase II of Kellogg’s ongoing sewer project during the Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce’s after hours social at the Silver Valley Airport.
The city is “99 percent done with Phase I” according to Pooler who also mentioned that crews are currently tying up the loose ends from Phase I.
“We have replaced 16,260 lineal feet of sewer,” Pooler said. “We replaced 76 sewer manholes and have paved 16 miles of roadway in Phase I.”
In December Pooler signed off on a $2.58 million loan as well as $860,000 in grant monies from the United States Department of Agriculture as part of Phase II.
“Without the USDA money we would really be in trouble,” Pooler had said. “We were lucky that the existing system held as long as it did and still is in some areas.”
Phase II of the project will take place on the north side of I-90 beginning in the Northwest corner of Kellogg.
Phase II is scheduled for 24,000 lineal feet of sewer line, 90 sewer manholes, 18 miles of new, clean based roadway, 600 service laterals, and water line upgrades.
Bidding for Phase III begins this month for the final 18,000 feet of sewer line on south side of the highway.
In November of 2105 residents of Kellogg approved a bond of $8,080,000 to revitalize or replace the sanitary sewer system in Kellogg with a 76 percent vote of approval. The city will not repair or replace any sewer line on private property, but will take video’s of each property’s existing line so that the property owners can be made aware of the condition of their existing sewer lines going into their homes. With the weather clearing up and construction crews getting ready to go back to work citizens are reminded to make sure that they have taken the proper measures as construction begins in their neighborhood.
Crews will be working in sections, mostly on a block by block basis. Residents of each block will be notified no less than one week prior to the work beginning in their area, notifications will be done by mail, as well as in person by a city representative and a representative from the contractor. Crews will begin work at 7 a.m. Please expect these crews to work six days a week. Citizens are advised to make sure that: Groceries are stocked up on. Proper daycare is arranged for both children and anyone who requires home health care or assistance. Any medical appointments are made appropriately and any prescriptions are filled. Have an alternative route home, as well as a place to park your vehicle that will keep it from being blocked in, or in the way of the workers. Should any residents have any emergency or special need situations while they are unable to get in and out of their property on a weekday, they are asked to call Kellogg Superintendent of Public Works Craig Lewis at (208) 786-9131. If an emergency or special need situations occurs during a weekend, nighttime, or holiday please contact the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Department at (208) 556-1114, they will be able to contact Mr. Lewis and arrange for any special circumstances.
