The Kellogg Wildcats home opening soccer match was spoiled when the Bonners Ferry Badgers capitalized on some early errors to knock the ‘Cats off 5-0 at Teeters Field.

The Badgers got their first goal in the first minute of play and went onto score three more in the first 40 minutes.

But three of the four goals came off of silly defensive errors that should be easily correctable as the season progresses.

The second half played out a lot more evenly, suggesting that there may have been some early jitters that needed to get out.

“We are young team who need to experience IML competition to get experience. We had too many chances to keep this game close, coach Craig Petersen said, “but like I said we are a young team that will have to learn quickly to finish with our scoring opportunities.”

This game was also a trial by fire situation for a team that doesn’t have much depth and will be expected to adapt on the fly.

“Many of the girls were asked to play positions they were not comfortable with due to having no substitutes,” Petersen said. “My hat’s off to Bonners team, they are well coached and capitalized on their chances.”

Kellogg will be in action Saturday, August 26, when they travel to Grangeville for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Bulldogs.
