KELLOGG — The Kellogg Rotary Club is raising money for Pinehurst Elementary School’s Backpack Program and is looking to challenge other groups in the surrounding community to get involved with them.

The Backpack Program provides weekend food for students whose families have been identified as needing additional assistance. From there the food is ordered, packaged and then put into the backpacks of the students on Friday afternoons before the kids leave school.

As special as the program is for those students, it is not free, which is why the Kellogg Rotary Club has set aside $3,000 to use as donation matches for every dollar (up to $3,000) that is donated to the program.

“The Kellogg Rotary would like to challenge citizens and organizations in the Silver Valley to help fund the Pinehurst Elementary Backpack meals program and we will match every donation all the way up to $3,000. The $3,000 in donations plus the $3,000 from the Rotary Club would fund the program for the rest of the school year,” said Mike Groves, Rotary Club member and PES principal. “It is the hope that in the future, the program will be able to generate ongoing donors so that it will be sustainable for as long as it is needed here in the Silver Valley.”

The program works in conjunction with the Real Life Ministries food room, which does the food ordering and packaging, then sends it to the school to distribute to the identified students.

Currently, the Shoshone County SAVE Coalition processes all donations and executes payment for the food.

If you would like to donate, please send a donation to the Shoshone County SAVE Coalition Corp, Backpack Program, P.O. Box 223, Pinehurst, ID 83850, or call them at 208-784-4602.
