Snow and ice add contrast to the iron-rich stones that line the creek-beds of Ninemile Creek in the Silver Valley.

I am always impressed with the kindness of fellow outdoor enthusiasts. They are quick to smile and wave, take a moment to chat, and share what knowledge they have of the trail ahead as well as other amazing destinations.

It seems to me that hikers especially are quite open when it comes to sharing their knowledge of beautiful and remote locations. It is through this kindness that I have been led to some of the most stunningly beautiful trails that the Pacific Northwest has to offer, so when someone wants to tell me about a trail, I lean in and listen!

Recently, I was contacted by kind reader and Silver Valley resident, James Zimmerman, who invited me out for coffee and a chance to learn more about the old pack trails and abandoned mines throughout the Silver Valley. I of course don’t need anyone to twist my arm when it comes to drinking coffee, or poring over maps in search of new hikes; so naturally, I jumped at the chance!

Being met with a smile was the beginning of a fun, two-hour “map fest” — over “machine gun style” questions of, “Have you been here, and have you been there?” Which ended up leading to a snow hike up a draw I had not yet explored. The short drive up Ninemile Creek from Wallace holds recreation for snowmobilers, cross country skiers, snowshoers, and snow hikers alike; but no matter what form of travel you choose, I recommend you bring a camera, because the beauty of Ninemile Creek is definitely worth capturing!

The blanket of fresh snow seemed to intensify the colors of the iron-rich stones that line the creek-beds, and every corner of the trail exposed new “oooh and ahhhh” inducing views. Ice formations in the creek as well as along its edges added the appearance of “jewelry,” which made our hike slow-going, due to the fact that I was drawn to take lots of photos of these special treats that only winter holds. As an added bonus, frost formations in the trees glistened like diamonds, and sparkled when illuminated by the sun.

To say that it was a beautiful day out is a complete understatement.

A new friendship was formed, and I can once again say that the knowledge shared amongst hikers is not only invaluable, but has once again proven to be worth more than any guidebook that can be purchased. The generous time spent by Mr. Zimmerman over coffee is sure to fuel our hikes with the goats over the upcoming summer months, as well as the remaining time we have to take in the beauty of winter.

Thinking back on it I am reminded of a quote I read recently, “Kindness is like snow, it beautifies everything it touches.”

I find this to be so true, and such a fitting statement for our valley as well as its residents!
