KHS JROTC holds annual awards ceremony
Student cadets with the Kellogg High School (KHS) JROTC program were recently recognized for their accomplishments throughout the year at their annual year-end awards ceremony.
Held in the KHS gym earlier , some of the cadets even received promotions within the program.
Instructor Major Craig Petersen thought the event went well and highlighted some of the bigger awards that were won during the event.
“The event went really well, it was well attended and had seven different organizations there to recognize the cadets,” Petersen said. “Joey Gibbs received the Silver Medal from the Sons of the American Revolution which was a big deal. We submit a nomination and Joey was the Idaho selection for the Bronze Medal. Winning the Bronze Medal makes you eligible for the Silver Medal and only 52 Silver Medals are given out nationally each year. Shea Curran received the Scottish Rite Award as well as the Women Marines Outstanding Cadet Award.”
Over 20 National Awards were given out, each carrying with it a scholarship opportunity for the cadet who received it.
“If an underclassman wins an award as a sophomore they can go and apply for a scholarship from that award later on when they’re a senior,” Petersen stated, “and we’ve got some kids who are really knocking it out of the park right now.”
Prior to the awards ceremony, the program also held a leadership camp at Shoshone Base Camp in early May.
Cadets who attended were able to take part in various exercises to help build teamwork and continuity within the program.
