Health fair continues to grow

The second annual 50+ Health & Fitness Fair sponsored by the Shoshone Medical Center was held May 31st at the SMC Community Outreach Center in Pinehurst.
The goal of the event is to promote health and wellness for the 50+ aged residents in the Silver Valley and to provide information and education on resources and activities available within the community.
The event came as part of a large number of free health screenings which included blood screenings that were done prior to the fair.
“This year there were 118 free screens performed with the majority of them being handed out at the health fair,” SMC marketing director Lisa Turpin said. “Scott Gibbs PA and Dr. Jara McDonald were present at the health fair to review results and provide explanations if needed.
People were able to find out their cholesterol, A1C (diabetes), electrolytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit (iron).”
Blood pressures were also checked at the blood draw and at the fair. The event featured several local health related vendors, which included local businesses, several SMC departments, as well as the local libraries, fitness groups, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, and representatives from the Idaho State Senior Health Insurance Benefit Advisor.
Overall the event was a success and Turpin is already at work to make sure that next year’s event is event bigger. “Over 100 people attended the health fair,” Turpin said, “the free blood screening and 50+ Health & Fitness Fair is an annual event so look for information in May 2018.”
