Road crews descend upon Silver Valley
Buckle your seat belts, Shoshone County — we’ve got construction.
If you have attempted to get on or drive Interstate 90 in the last few days, you have noticed that Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) road construction crews are out in force this spring working on several different projects from Cataldo to the Montana state line.
ITD has set timetables for completion of some of these projects, but some are still simply slated for 2017 completion.
Many of these projects are the result of the harsher-than-normal winter we experienced this year that caused numerous potholes and cracks in our roads and bridges.
The following is a list of the six ITD construction projects in the Shoshone County and the available information on them:
I-90 bridge repair project
A series of repair projects on 12 bridges in seven locations along Interstate 90 will bring eastbound off-ramp closures that started on Thursday, June 8 at Kellogg’s Exit 49 and Tuesday, June 13 at Silverton (Exit 60) around 3 p.m.
The eastbound closures will last for about two months, followed by westbound on-ramp closures at the same locations starting in early August and lasting an additional two months.
The interstate ramps will be closed to facilitate concrete overlays at the structures.
Traffic will be limited to one lane within work zones, and widths restricted to 14 feet.
The project will include repair or replacement of expansion joints, approach slabs, concrete cracking and guardrail repairs. Minor pavement removal and replacement also will occur near the S. Fork Coeur d’Alene, Silverton Interchange, and Silverton Business Loop Bridges.
Locations slated for placement of epoxy overlay:
- Two bridges at Big Creek Road at milepost (MP) 54.18. East and West bound lanes affected.
- Two bridges at Johnson Street interchange at MP 55.75. East and West bound lanes affected.
- Two bridges at 3rd Street Interchange at MP 57.02. East and West bound lanes affected.
- One bridge at Silverton I-90 business loop at MP 3.86.
Locations slated for hydrodemo and placement of concrete overlay:
- Two bridges at S Fork CDA River at MP 49.45. East and West bound lanes affected.
- Two bridges at S Fork CDA River at MP 58.98. East and West bound lanes affected.
- One bridge at Silverton interchange at MP 59.54.
C.L. Heilman Company, of Coeur d’Alene, is the contractor on this $2.7 million project. The overall work will continue through September.
I-90, Pinehurst to Kellogg
Contractor is sealcoating the roadway and all ramps from milepost 44.5 to 49.00. Minor ramp closures are expected, but will be short term. It is suggested motorists use alternative routes.
I-90, Kellogg to Elizabeth Park Road
Contractor is sealcoating the roadway and all ramps from milepost 49.00 to 51.956. Minor ramp closures are expected, but will be short term. It is suggested motorists use alternative routes.
Work on this project will be done at the same time as the Pinehurst to Kellogg project due to both having the same prime contractor.
This will help reduce the overall time for the project to be completed and reduce traffic impacts. Work is expected to begin August 1 and run for approximately two weeks.
I-90, milepost 2.0 to 68.25
Contractor will be replacing overhead signs both on the interstate mainline and select ramps and interchanges from Washington State Line to Mullan.
Some ground-mount signs will also be replaced at certain locations.
Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures both on the interstate, and on interchanges as work takes place.
Total time for the project is 45 working days — perhaps only a few weeks in the Silver Valley.
I-90, Interchange #34, #39, & #40 Safety Improvement Project
ITD will be installing illumination at interchange #34 at Rose Lake and at Interchange #40 at Cataldo. There will be periodic temporary lane closures with most work being done on the shoulder and there will only be one closure at a time. The guardrail at interchange #39 at the Cataldo Mission will also be replaced, causing shoulder closures at the interchange.
I-90, Mullan to Montana
The contract work on this project is complete, but repair work will be impacting traffic.
Remedial work is being negotiated with the Contractor at this time, so the extent and timing of traffic impacts is unknown as of right now.
The 511 Traveler Information System will be updated as dates are set.
