WALLACE — Adding to its already impressive list of accolades and awards, USA Today’s “10Best” website has ranked Wallace, Idaho as the 8th best Northwestern Small Town.

The website explains that 10Best’s editors, with help from local travel experts, weighed several options for the list and eventually narrowed it down to 20 towns from the six states included in the category of “Northwestern” (this includes Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming).

The towns were chosen with the only requisite of having a population less than 10,000 in the region (according to the latest census data).

Once the top 20 were chosen, 10Best’s readers then voted on the top 10 for four weeks.

When the voting concluded, Wallace stood out on the list as the only one from Idaho.

Here is what 10Best said about the Silver Valley’s historic hotspot-

“The historic town of Wallace owes its existence to the rich silver deposits found in the surrounding countryside. It’s also the only city in the U.S. where every single downtown building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.”

Wallace mayor Dick Vester is incredibly happy with his town and believes that the award is well deserved.

“I’m thankful for them picking us,” Vester said. “It seems that we gradually become more discovered every year.”

Vester also mentioned that the city consistently ranks high in these type of contests.

“Wallace is almost always at the top of these lists.”

Coming in behind Wallace was 9. Cooke City, Mont. and 10. Talkeetna, Alaska.

Directly above them was 7. Winthrop, Wash. and 6. Friday Harbor, Wash.
