Honoring those who served
OSBURN — Veterans Day, originally called “Armistice Day,” was established by Congress in 1938 as a federal holiday to honor American military servicemen and women of all wars.
The date, Nov. 11, was chosen to coincide with the armistice called on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 that signaled the end of World War I.
The day itself has evolved over the years and means different things to different people. To those who served, it can be a reminder of their service to their county and a time to reach out to fellow vets. To those who did not serve, it can be a day of thankfulness and admiration for those who put so much on the line.
The Silver Valley has long been known as a place that honors its veterans. Many of its residents have gone off to serve in one branch or another throughout the county’s history. Some coming home, some not.
In an effort to show their respect to the ones that did, cities across the valley will be holding numerous Veterans Day events this week. The Kellogg High School JROTC will have the honor and privilege of presenting the nation’s colors at many of them.
Events being held locally to recognize Veterans Day include:
