Samuel Thomas Pope, 80

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Samuel Thomas Pope, 80, of Silverton, Idaho, passed away October 4, 2017 at the Shoshone Medical Center of Kellogg. He was born April 4, 1937 in New Orleans, Louisiana; Sam was the son of Batson and Maude (Helton) Pope.

Sam moved to the Silver Valley as a young boy with his family in 1943. He attended and graduated from the Wallace High School in 1955.

Sam married Sandra “Sandy” Parsell on May 3, 1957 in Wallace, Idaho.

Sam had first worked at the Wallace Bowling Alley during high school to earn money to buy his first car- a 1939 Chevrolet. He then went to work at Scoops Union 76 and went on to work as a miner at the Star Mine. In 1964 - 1973, Sam work at the Citizens Utilities Company and had also attended Lineman School at the Spokane Community College of Spokane. After lineman school, Sam worked as a lineman for the Washington Water Power Company, later becoming Avista, for twenty-six years; he retired in 2000.

Sam was a member of the Wallace Elks Lodge #331, a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association and a member of the IBEW Local#77.

Sam loved and enjoyed his family, flying his plane, building furniture in his wood shop, traveling the United States and other countries, taking care of his home and visiting friends and family.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years Sandra “Sandy” Pope of the family home of Silverton; three children Jim and Helen Pope of St. Maries, Idaho, Janice and Jay Helms of Newman Lake, Washington and Julie and John Petrou of Missoula, Montana; five grandchildren Mandy Pope, Cody Pope, Sam Helms, Demetri Petrou, and Sam Petrou; six great-grandchildren Khalil, Mariah, Madisyn, Peyton, Reagan and Cyrus; three brothers John DeVore of Loveland, Colorado, Charles DeVore of Beaverton, Oregon and Wayne Pope of Summerville, South Carolina; one sister Donna Steffensmeier of Locust Grove, Virginia; he is also survived by several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 2:00 P.M., at the Wallace Elks Lodge of Wallace with Pastor Art Fleming officiating. Interment will be held at the Nine Mile Cemetery of Wallace. A reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Wallace Elks following services; everyone is welcome.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the charity of the Donor’s choice.
