Saturday 9/2 WALLACE - 50 CLEARWATER VALLEY - 22 MOSCOW - For the second year in a row the Wallace Miners opened their White Pine League conference schedule against the Clearwater Valley Rams inside the University of Idaho’s Kibbie Dome. For the second year in a row the Miners beat the Rams inside the Kibbie Dome. But, unlike last year, Saturday’s game was never in question. As a matter of fact, instead of the dramatic ending that last year’s game saw, this one was never in question as Wallace rolled to a 50-22 win. Miner Layton Gallagher took the opening kickoff back to the Rams’ 10-yard line and at the 11-minute marker of the first quarter the score stood as 8-0 in favor of Wallace. That kind of dominance was seen on both sides of the ball as the Miners abused the Rams for much of the first half, but they did have one slip up when they allowed a 60-yard touchdown with a minute and a half remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 28-6. Miner quarterback Erik Brackebusch seemed to take that very personally and proceeded to lead Wallace on a near surgical drive to put the score at 34-6 headed into the intermission. The Miners found their way into the endzone two more times before the game ended, but they also gave up a few more scores of their own. No official stats or comments were received for this game. The Miners (2-0) will stay in WPL play next week when they host the Potlatch Loggers next Friday at Sather FIeld.

Thursday 8/31 WALLACE — The Miners struggled to find their groove on Thursday as the Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers took their non-league match in three sets 25-19, 25-23, 25-21. “We had a couple players who seemed off tonight,” Miner coach Anali Spooner said. “We got behind and just could get going to catch up.”

Thursday 8/31 ST. MARIES — The Wildcats fell to the Lumberjacks in three sets, 25-6, 25-19, 25-15. No further stats or information were received for this match.

Post Falls River Run

POST FALLS - The Wildcat cross country team had a decent showing against multiple 5A and 4A schools. The top finishers for Kellogg were Jared White (20:20), Garrett Miller (20:46), and Zach Bergem (21:01). The Wildcat girls ran in the junior varsity race.

TIMBERLAKE - 8

The Kellogg Wildcats put on a defensive clinic for the first 27 minutes of play, but their ‘bend, but not break’ strategy could only hold for so long. In the final 13 minutes of the first half the Tigers scored three goals to take a 3-0 lead into the halftime. “We played a solid Timberlake team evenly for 30 minutes,” coach Craig Petersen said. “My team needs to compete for 80 minutes, but that will come with experience. As I've told the team I'm expecting improvement every game and could care less what the score shows.” Petersen was pleased with his players though, playing with no subs to come in, all of his players played the full 80 minutes of regulation.

“I thought Teaya Sheppard, Shea Curran, and Sierra Keele played with grit and the competitiveness I want to see from the entire team,” Petersen said. “It's a long season and I'm proud of the mental toughness they are starting to show.”

MEDICAL LAKE - 6

MEDICAL LAKE - The Wildcats rebounded from last week’s loss with a huge road win over the Cardinals.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 15-0 lead at halftime, but as good as the win must have felt, Kellogg had several missed opportunities.

“We had a 99.5 yard touchdown and 85 yard touchdown called back and fumbled going into score, so we missed those opportunities,” coach Dan Lucier said. “We also stayed much more encouraged last night than last week.”

Medical Lake was able to pull within nine points, but Kellogg’s defense clamped down and Wildcat quarterback scored his second rushing touchdown to effectively seal the win for the Wildcats.

“We are getting much better,” Lucier said. “Our focus is great effort, being ferocious competitors, and finishing strong.”

Kellogg (1-1) will host Orofino on Friday at Teeters Field.

MULLAN PAVILION - It was a battle of the Tigers, but unfortunately St. Regis got the better of Mullan during their home opening match last week.

Mullan fell in three sets 9-14, 17-25, and 23-25.

“We had a slow start,” coach Dawn McKinnon said. “We struggled with our serve receiving a bit, but we picked up a little momentum in sets two and three, but not enough for a win.”

MULLAN - The Mullan Tigers first game back into the 8-man realm of football didn’t go quite according to plan as they fell to Deary at John Drager Field.

Despite the score, coach Stetson Spooner was pretty pleased with the outcome.

“It was a very good game for us,” Spooner said. “Deary is a juggernaut. That team and coaching staff is one class act for sure. We got down to six players due to cramps at one point and coach Eggers played accordingly.”

The Mustangs jumped out to a 22-point lead, but Mullan finally got on the board after Riley Trogden found the endzone on a 50-yard screen pass from Gryphon Todd.

Spooner liked the effort he saw from his team and believes that it will be a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

“My boys shattered the expectations of effort and heart and pride and finished the game with their heads held high after making a state title caliber defense that is Deary really have to work,” Spooner said. “As a head coach I am very proud of the effort from our young men and extremely excited for the rest of our season to see what success it may bring for our guys.”

For Mullan, Sheldon Trogden had a game high 161 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Todd finished with 145 passing yards and one passing touchdown.

Mullan (0-1) will have a week off before traveling to Kootenai for a showdown with the Warriors on September 15.
