The Smelterville Lions Club held their annual Frontier Days celebration on Saturday and it boasted some good ol’ fashioned North Idaho fun for all ages.
The day began at 11 a.m. with a short parade down Main Street made up mostly of emergency service vehicles.
Once the parade made its way through, it was time for the young-at-heart to climb onto their customized lawnmowers and drag race each other in front of the Lions Club building.
Racers from all around North Idaho participated in the event and really showed the crowd that these lawnmowers were built for speed.
The competition pitted drivers head-to-head and then through a time trail to determine the winner.

After the lawnmower drag races, it was time for the actual young to put their petal to the...plastic.
For the first time, Frontier Days featured a powerwheels event for kids which had them traversing an obstacle course assembled with wood, tires, siding, and sand.
A couple powerwheel cars even sported some after market modifications such as larger batteries to maybe give them an edge.
Following the timed obstacle course, the young racer then competed against each other in a drag race.
Though some did not fully understand the concept, it was a blast for those who participated (and a hoot for those who watched).
Frontier Days finished off with an outdoor showing of “Stand by me” at the old Drive-in Movie theater in Smelterville.
Although the drive-in (and the event as a whole) did not have the same turnout that it did last year, there was still fun had by all.
Paul Twidt, Smelterville Lions Club member, says that the lower turnout had a lot to do with the famous demolition derby being absent from this years event.
“I think it went very well, considering we didn’t have a demo this year,” he said.
“That definitely changed the crowd.”
The biggest surprise of the day was how well the kids activity turned out.
“The powerwheels event went over tremendously and I think that event will definitely grow,” Twidt said.
The Smelterville Lions Club resurrected Frontier Days in 2013 and is planing on bring back the demolition derby next year at a new location in town.
