KELLOGG –– It was a rough week at home for the Kellogg Wildcats volleyball squad as they dropped consecutive home matches to Timberlake (25-16, 25-22, 25-9) and St. Maries (25-15, 25-18, 25-13).

Both matches were much more competitive than the scores would infer, but the Lumberjacks and Tigers were able to find the weaknesses in the Kellogg defense, which made it hard for the Wildcats to get their own offense going.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats hung tough with Timberlake for the first two sets, but it seemed as though the Tigers capitalized off every error, both Kellogg’s and their own.

Kellogg did manage to match them point for point during the second set, until an errant serve gave the Tigers the advantage they needed to wrap the set up.

“We need to start the way we play when we are coming back,” Wildcat coach Hollie Yrjana said. “We start so flat, we need to find our energy and keep it.”

During the Wildcats match with the Lumberjacks on Thursday, there was a definite sense of urgency, unlike the match earlier in the week.

Bodies hit the floor on a regular basis as Kellogg fought valiantly to stay in the match, but the Lumberjacks used skilled hitting to keep Kellogg from gaining any ground.

Once again, it was the second set that provided the Wildcat faithful with the most excitement, but the ‘Cats couldn’t close it out.

“Our serving and our blocking kept us alive tonight,” Yrjana said. “But we did not pass well and it’s awfully hard to run an offense if you can’t pass the ball.”

There were three Wildcats in particular who stood out throughout the week, each bringing a different benefit to the game for Kellogg.

“Maddie Bush has been serving very well, including adding a jump serve to her arsenal,” Yrjana said. “Kat (Rauenhorst) has been playing well for us, especially her blocking tonight (Thursday) she really kept us in the matches. Jaron (Figueroa) has been playing all over the court for us. She is out there running and diving for loose balls, she has been our most consistent energy.”

Kellogg 46, Omak 3

OMAK –– The Kellogg Wildcats continued their winning ways with their third straight win as they knocked off the Omak Pioneers. The Wildcats were dominant on both sides of the ball as they held Omak to 3 points.

The Wildcats (3-1) will host West Valley of Spokane this Friday at Teeters Field.

Cross Country

Thompson Falls Invitational

THOMPSON FALLS –– The Kellogg Wildcats continued to work their way toward districts when they took on the course at River Bend Golf Course. The boys team finished in seventh place overall and were paced by Jared White, Jesse Campbell, and Garrett Miller who finished with times of 19:48, 20:04, and 20:08 respectively.

Kellogg ran again on Tuesday in Priest River, but results were not ready as of press time.

KELLOGG –– It was all offense in Kellogg on Saturday, when the Wildcats and Bulldogs combined for 10 goals. Emma Noto scored three times, Lora Allred twice, and Taeya Sheppard once to round out the Wildcat scoring.

Coach Craig Petersen saw some things he really liked from his young team.

“I’m really pleased with our offensive unit, and I know the team is gaining confidence in their abilities,” Petersen said. “Defensively we need to continue to improve, still making ill-advised decisions and it’s costing the team to work harder and we are giving up goals. I think we have the best goalie in the league and Shea Curran keeps us in a lot of games.”

WALLACE HIGH SCHOOL

Football

- Saturday 9/23

Kamiah 40, Wallace 20

KAMIAH –– The Wallace Miners were unable to get their running attack going which made the going very tough against Kamiah as they lost 40-20 to their White Pine League opponents.

Wallace started out well, using a solid passing game to build a 14-12 halftime lead.

Kamiah came out fired up in the second half and the Miner defense did not respond the way coach Jared Young hoped they would.

This week, the Miners will see their toughest test of the season in the form of Genesee, and coach Young is hoping his guys will rebound from this loss and use it as motivation.

“I think the long bus ride played a role in the game as well as we didn't come out with the same intensity as we normally do,” Young said. “Not making any excuses, but we have to come out with more focus this week and take care of the basics of tackling and blocking if we are to be successful in our next league game with Genesee.

Quarterback Erik Brackebusch finished with 208 yards passing with two touchdowns for the Miners (3-2) who host Genesee at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Volleyball

- Thursday 9/21

Clark Fork (Montana) d. Wallace

WALLACE –– The Wallace Miners went the distance with Clark Fork, but it wasn’t enough as they fell in five sets.

Coach Anali Spooner was pleased with her girls’ performance in their first games at home since August.

“That's the best teamwork I've seen from my team all season,” Spooner said. “We were moving well, and covering well. Those are two things we've been working on. They played with so much heart and it really showed on the court.”

Maggie Howard, Halei Underbuehler, and Destiny Angle were Spooner’s standouts during the match and she’ll need them to continue to play big as the Miners get into their league play.

MULLAN HIGH SCHOOL

Football

- Friday 9/22

Kendrick 52, Mullan 8

MULLAN –– It was a tough afternoon for the Mullan Tigers as they fell to Kendrick 52-8 at Mullan’s homecoming.

Kendrick, one of the top 1A Division II teams in the state, looked the part as they dissected the Tigers, on both sides of the ball.

Kendrick recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff and never looked back.

Mullan showed several signs of defensive prowess, but for each big play they would make, they would then give up a big gain.

The Tiger offense seemed to work in this cycle as well, with senior quarterback Gryphon Todd making difficult throws to Skye Gallaway and Sheldon and Riley Trogden, but then the offense would stall or turn the ball over and Kendrick would go right back on the offensive.

Coach Stetson Spooner saw this game as a proving grounds of sorts for his team, and while he was bummed by the outcome, he saw a few things that he thought were positives.

“We improved in some areas but seemed very flat,” Spooner said. “We beat ourselves and should’ve competed much better. Sophomore Skye Gallaway and freshman Riley Trogden seem to keep making big plays but our inexperience seems to kill our drives at times.”

Kendrick held a 52-0 halftime lead, but the Mullan defense played a lot better in the second half, holding Kendrick scoreless, while scoring their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Todd to Gallaway.

Spooner did credit his opposition for living up to their hype, but acknowledged that Mullan is definitely a better team than what they showed on Friday.

“All credit goes to Kendrick for playing well enough to beat anyone today,” Spooner said. “We just didn’t do ourselves any favors.”

Mullan (0-3) will travel to Plummer next week for a matchup with Lakeside.

Volleyball

Kootenai d. Mullan

MULLAN –– The Tigers were unable to get their offense going and the Kootenai Warriors made quick work of them winning in three sets at the Mullan Pavilion.

Coach Dawn McKinnon likes that her girls seem to have mental toughness, but would like to see a little more movement from them.

“Overall we seem to stay positive,” McKinnon said. “We certainly need to improve our communication and hustle. We are too flat on our feet.”

McKinnon was also pleased with the effort of Emily Dykes.

“Emily is always consistent on the service line and plays hard all the way around,” McKinnon said.
