COEUR d’ALENE — The home course was kind to local golfers... even if it was very soggy after a night of heavy rains.

PINEHURST — In an event that included boys and girls scrambles and best ball competition, St. Maries took home the traveling trophy in Monday’s 18-hole Mullan Invitational at Pinehurst Golf Course.

Tabitha Boller and Gabrielle Harold took first in the girls best ball event, helping the Lumberjacks compile 27 points in the team standings, which were scored similar to a track meet, Mullan golf coach Paul Elston said.

“This is the first year we’ve had the traveling trophy and this format. We’re trying to inject a little fun into high school golf at the 1A and 2A level,” Elston said. “It really seemed to work — we received a lot of positive feedback and everyone made it through all 18 holes despite sideways rain, hail and wind.”

To maximize participation, in some events golfers from different schools were paired on teams, or threesomes were allowed.

Kellogg 5–14, Priest River 14–9

KELLOGG — The Wildcats split with the Spartans in their first home game of the season.

“The first game we came out a little flat the first three innings and gave up 11 runs and committed to many errors then the girls settled down and only gave up three runs the rest of the game. I thought we hit the ball well but seemed we couldn’t find the gaps and Priest River made some good defensively plays.”

The second game went better as senior Rylee Riekena struck out eight players and walked only one. Mac Ross hit a 3-run home run as well and the Wildcats picked up the win.
