Local athlete aspires for international competition
KELLOGG — Kellogg High School track athlete Triston Carman was recently invited to travel to Australia as part in Down Under Sports’ international track event in July of this year.
Carman, a senior at KHS, has been a standout athlete for the track team, as well as the football and basketball programs.
After years of consistent improvement on the track team, Carman feels confident that he will be able to compete against some of the best athletes from the United States and Australia.
“I have qualified for state the last few years,” Carman said. “I think it would be a lot of fun to compete against some different competition.”
The program will allow Carman time to travel and take in the scenery of Australia, then he will have practices and compete in the three-day track meet against other Americans — as well as some Australian track and field athletes.
“I have never been out of the United States before,” Carman said. “I am excited to get out and travel, but I also love competing so this is going to be a lot of fun for me.”
The trip isn’t cheap though; with a $5,200 price tag, the experience can be nearly impossible for most student-athletes to achieve.
Carman has raised a little over $2,400 so far and is now looking to see if he can get community support to get to his goal.
“All donations we have received have been from relatives,” Carman’s aunt Heather Collins said.
“We have gone out to a few of the local businesses and hope that they will help out as well.”
