Doesn’t matter big or small, if you have a unique car, it needs to come to Pinehurst Days.

You ever take that off any sweet jumps? Jayce Haynes grabs some air during the championship round of the 10-11 age group BMX races. Haynes would go on to win the event.

The crowd moves throughout the car show at Pinehurst Days. Some of the cars were cool enough people had to lift their shades just to take it all in.

PINEHURST — This past weekend was the annual Pinehurst Days and Comancheros Car Show, and with the combination of cool cars, fun activities, great food and warm weather — the event was a great success.

With a full count still unavailable as of Monday afternoon, the car show reportedly on Aug. 4 almost broke its own record for most classic cars, which meant lots of reasons to walk around.

Friday night, the Pinehurst-Kingston Lions Club hosted a steak dinner that fed over 130 people and that was really before the event began.

As vendors opened on Saturday morning, the streets began to fill with people anxiously awaiting the beginning of the annual parade, which was Grand Marshalled by Pinehurst legend Lawanna Watts.

A Pinehurst resident since 1972, Watts was instrumental in getting Pinehurst Days started and has been just as important in keeping it going.

From its early days as a carnival, complete with a vast variety of entertainment, to it being one of the first places to host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, to the current iteration of the event — Watts has consistently been involved.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without Sherm (Lawanna’s husband) and Sherri’s (Lawanna’s daughter) help and support,” Watts said. “The volunteers of the community and the Chamber of Commerce also need to be thanked.”

Following the parade, the car show continued to impress spectators, while vendors peddled unique items.

As the vendors and cars cleared out, the Pinehurst BMX track became ground zero for the rest of the event as more than 100 residents packed in on Saturday night for a showing of “Cars 3.”

Sunday morning was for the riders though, as diminutive daredevils got on their bikes and raced around the Pinehurst BMX track.

This year the PK Lions purchased two bicycles from Excelsior Cycle. One to be raffled off and one to be given away in a drawing amongst the racers.

Overall, the event went well and Bruce Rumpel with PK Lions Club was pleased with how everything played out.

“The weather was very nice compared to most Pinehurst days weather,” Rumpel said. “Overall the event went well. I think we were real close to having the most cars we have ever had.”

Jenny Duce, another one of the event organizers was thankful for community support the event has continued to receive.

“Many businesses participate in their own quiet way making the effort to contribute to the positive community event,” Duce said. “Thank you to the vendors, those who came to enjoy the festivities, and anyone that helped make Pinehurst Days a success.”
