MULLAN — The Mullan City Council approved the renewal of the city’s contract with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week at their monthly city council meeting.

Mullan also increased the amount of money that they are paying from $6,000 per year to $9,000 per year.

Unlike many of the cities in Shoshone County, who require a certain threshold of patrol hours as part of their contract, Mullan contracts with the SCSO for the purpose of enforcing city ordinances, tagging cars and other blight ordinances.

Mullan’s small population and low need for active patrols allows the city to not need a required amount of patrolling, which also allows them to pay a smaller amount than other cities that do.

“We don’t require a heavy police presence up here in Mullan, which is nice for our community,” Mullan Mayor Don Kotschevar said. “We are so happy to have a relationship with our sheriff’s department that allows us to keep our city clean without requiring a lot of them.”

Shoshone County Sheriff Mike Gunderson was pleased that the relationship with his agency and Mullan will carry on.

“We’re happy to be renewing our contract up there in Mullan,” Gunderson said. “This allows us to patrol the city and continue to enforce the city’s ordinances and we are happy to be serving the citizens of Mullan.”
