SMELTERVILLE — Five members of the Silver Valley Boxing Club came home with individual titles last Saturday from the Inland Empire Novice Championships held in Spokane.

Leading the charge for the valley boxers was 118-pounder Adam Cato, who was voted the outstanding fighter in his class. According to Silver Valley Boxing Club coach Danny Welty, Cato took his first fight handily as he rocked his opponent with three standing eight counts before the referee stopped the contest.

Cato then won his second bout on points against his teammate from the Silver Valley Boxing Club Chris Nielsen. Welty said Nelson did a fantastic job in the fight.

Jeremy Hiaasen fighting at 86-pounds, was an uncontested champion but did fight an exhibition match in which he lost a split decision against a more experienced fighter.

Jamie Hill, fighting at 85-pounds was also an uncontested champ. Welty said Hill made a good showing in his exhibition fight before dropping a split decision.

Craig Fackrell won his second title of the year in the 86-pound match in the tourney. Fackrell fought a good fight against a boy from Everett, Washington, in taking his crown.

Another uncontested champ for the Silver Valley Boxing Club was 123-pounder Gonzalo Ballester.

Ricky Wright ran into a little bad luck according to Welty as he went toe-to-toe with a tough fighter out of the Spokane Eagles Boxing Club. Welty said Wright caught a stray shot and the referee stopped the contest.

Valley fight fans will have a chance to see the club in action at home this weekend as 14 local boxers will be on the card at the Kellogg Bowling Alley Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

The main event of the night will feature Floyd Draine Jr., a two-time Idaho State Golden Gloves champion. Draine will take on a fighter from the East Side Boxing Club out of Spokane.

Admission to the card, which will include 20 bouts, will be $3 for adults and $2.50 for students. There will also be raffles held during the action.
