WALLACE — Zack Welch scored 22 points and the Wallace Miners handed the Genesis Prep Jaguars their first loss as a member of the North Star League, 57-50 on Thursday at Kirby Krulitz Court.

Wallace, ranked fifth in this week’s 1A Division media poll, should begin steeling themselves for a deep potential run in this year’s state tournament after their torrid start to the season.

“This was a big win for us, it feels really good to get another win over a team that we’ve struggled with in the past,” Wallace coach Corey Miller said. “It’s nice having guys like Logan Hull and Logan Brantz who can handle a big load on defense which allows for our scorers to really focus on what they do best.”

Kon Ajang and Scott Mwinuka scored 20 points each for Genesis Prep, the two-time defending state 1A Division II champions, and ranked No. 1 in this week’s poll.

The Jaguars had won 31 straight North Star League games since joining the league in the 2015-16 season.

Genesis Prep star guard Jonny Hillman, who signed with NAIA Carroll College in November, sat out the game due to an ankle injury; however the Miners played their first game without their starting guard duo of Carter Bailey and Hunter Stutzke.

PRIEST RIVER — Wallace’s Zach Welch led all scorers with 31 points and Erik Brackebusch chipped in 25 en route to a 75-62 win over winless Priest River on Saturday.

Despite playing only six players deep due to injuries, Wallace’s offense prevailed, preserving its perfect 7-0 record.

“Offensively, we played well — Zach Welch did a good job of getting to the hoop and hitting threes,” Wallace head coach Corey Miller said. “And it was great to see Erik Brackebusch take over, hold down the ship and keep everyone in control when Zach was out.”

MULLAN — Trailing by 17 points at halftime, the host Tigers outscored the Superior/Alberton co-op 37-8 in the second half — 27-3 in the third quarter — in a wild comeback at the Mullan Pavilion.

“We got after them defensively, and we started playing really good basketball at both ends of the court,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said of the second half.

That after two of the five Tigers players to suit up — Chandler Holling and Wyatt King, who just became eligible — picked up their fourth fouls early in the third quarter. But neither was whistled for a fifth.

Riley Trogden scored 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half for Mullan (3-3), including 14 in the third quarter. Luke Trogden added 15 points.

“This was just a great, great group effort,” Elston said, praising Holling in particular for his performance.

Aaron Waddell had 14 of his 19 points in the first half for Clark Fork.

SPOKANE — The visiting Wildcats opened up a double-digit lead in the game’s first eight minutes and cruised to victory in a contest where every Kellogg player scored.

“We came out with a press early on, forced several turnovers and got an early jump on them,” Wildcats coach Jana Nearing-Kothe said.

Kat Rauenhorst and Katlin Senteney led the balanced Kellogg attack with nine points each, while La Nia Thompson had nine points for Shadle Park.

The Wildcats (5-4) return to action Thursday at Wallace.

WALLACE — The Miners took advantage of a shorthanded Jaguar team to run away with a big North Star League win.

Jaden House scored a game-high 15 points for Wallace in its league opener.

“We played a strong game with strong defense, and good ball movement,” coach Nichole Farkas said. “Catie Sheppard had an outstanding game defensively with numerous deflections and steals.”

Trinity Morrow led Genesis Prep with five points.

“This was our best game of the season by far,” Wallace coach Nichole Farkas said.

Jaden House led all scorers with 17 points, including five 3-pointers.

KELLOGG — The Wildcats got just about everything they could from senior Brennan Atkins, but it just wasn’t enough as the Wildcats lost a tough one at home to the Bulldogs.

Atkins had 25 points in the game, but no other Wildcats hit double figures.

Previously winless Sandpoint trailed by six at the half, but finally pulled ahead in the fourth quarter.

SPOKANE — The Wildcats suffered their biggest loss in the Jeff Nearing era on Saturday when they lost to Shadle Park.
