New Year's resolution, here we come

SMELTERVILLE – We have all heard it– whether it be you or someone you know saying around this time of the year that they are going to get into shape after the holidays.
As far as New Year’s resolutions go, this one is fairly common. What isn’t as common though is the follow-through of that resolution.
Hoping to take at least the financial strain off of achieving this goal, Shoshone Medical Center’s Wellness Center has announced that they will be offering free memberships to anyone 14-years-of-age or older throughout the month of January.
“The goal is that you get started here, and even if you’re used to a different gym or working out at home, this will be the kick-off to healthier living,” Wellness Center Manager Jonnie Nosworthy said.
According to the 2018 County Health Rankings compiled by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Shoshone County ranks 41 out 42 participating counties in the State in overall health. The rankings also showed that the percentage of physically inactive adults (25 percent) and obese adults (30 percent) in Shoshone County remains high.
The free membership grants members access to all the gym equipment and accompanying facilities. This also includes receiving advice from the staff on how to get started.
“If you aren’t familiar with exercise centers or exercise plans of any kind, just wanting direction is understandable,” Nosworthy said. “We will have a few plans to hand out and follow based on general goals and how often you are in the gym.”
The Wellness Center also just recently received some new equipment, thanks to a sizable donation by the SMC Foundation.
On top of the unfettered access, the free January membership will also allow people to jump in on standard classes offered at the Wellness Center– such as Fitness for Life. Access to specialty classes, such as yoga, and personal training sessions will require paying an additional fee.
SMC’s Board of Trustees hopes that this period of an open gym will help the hospital accomplish their mission of promoting wellness.
