WALLACE — Random gunshots in Mullan and a missing change machine in Wallace — what a pair.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reports that they are currently investigating two separate incidents in Mullan and Wallace that occurred around the New Year holiday.

The first incident had deputies responding to the 500 block of Pine Street in Mullan on Dec. 29 and 30 for reports of gunshots. Undersheriff Holly said in a news release that “Upon further investigation, we confirmed that numerous rounds were fired and two occupied homes were hit.” Mullan residents had been taking to social media for several weeks to air their frustrations regarding the frequent shooting. “Someone is shooting, day and night, in Mullan,” one resident posted to Facebook on Dec. 23. “My dogs are scared to death. PLEASE STOP!!”

Once they learned that this was not just an isolated incident, deputies have been in the process of collecting statements and conducting interviews to narrow down the culprit.

Although no one was injured by any of the gunfire, Lindsey stressed that the SCSO is taking this very seriously and will utilize every resource available to follow up all leads pertaining to this case.

“Our office will be conducting concentrated patrols in suspect areas and ask all citizens to stay vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behavior in your community,” she added.

SCSO declined to comment further on the situation, stating that “this is still an active investigation and at this time, and in order to preserve our investigation, no further information can be released.”

The second incident occurred just down the road from the Sheriff’s Office at the Wallace laundromat on Cedar St. Captain Jeremy Groves stated that “a financial piece of equipment along with other items were taken.” On Dec. 31, a post was made on Facebook revealing that the “piece of equipment” was in fact the change machine used to get quarters. Groves declined to comment further on the incident, stating that it is “an active investigation and at this time, and in order to preserve our investigation, no further information can be released.” It is unknown at this time how much money the perpetrator(s) got away with.
