KELLOGG — The countdown toward the annual Brawl for the Ball spirit game between Kellogg High School and St. Maries High School on Jan. 20, has began.

Since its inception in 2007, the event has gained more and more community support and involvement with the main focus being to help others within the local and surrounding communities.

KHS associated student body president Rylee Riekena loves seeing the community come together during this time and also is excited for how many of the school’s different organizations get to be involved.

“Brawl brings the community and schools together to help local charities in both of our respective communities, while also showcasing different extracurricular activities at each school like band, cheerleading, and our JROTC,” Riekena said. “This is our signature event during basketball season and we always have a great turnout.”

There are several ways to help with the various causes, including the food drive for Brawl for the Ball, at every home basketball event there will be students selling 50/50 raffle tickets. The raffle tickets are being sold right now by students and will continue to be sold until tickets are gone. Students selling tickets are Kellogg leadership students, basketball players and they can be purchased at the KHS office.

The winner of the raffle will be drawn during halftime of the girls varsity basketball game.

The food drive has been a huge success over the past few years, including last year where the drive raised more than 3,500 pounds of food from just the drop-off sites at the schools.

This year there are several different sites to donate food, including Colour-Me-Coffee, KHS, Pinehurst Elementary School, Canyon Elementary School, bankcda, Yoke’s, Noah’s, Froyo and IGA. Non-perishables are the name of the game and the heavier the better, including canned food items (soups, veggies, chili, etc), boxed dinners, pasta, potatoes and any other item that won’t go bad.

Kellogg is going into this year’s edition as the defending champion and will need as much support as they can get.

Brawl for the Ball begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 at St. Maries High School.
