Richard 'Dick' Charles Whalen, 85

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Richard “Dick” Charles Whalen, 85, of Osburn, Idaho, passed away Jan. 5, 2018, at the Mountain Valley of Cascadia in Kellogg, Idaho. He was born May 16, 1932, in Kingston, Idaho. Dick was the son of John and Susan (Heim) Whalen.

Dick has lived in the Silver Valley for most of his life. He attended and graduated from the Coeur d’Alene High School in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 1950. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.

Dick first married Eileen Clouting on Dec. 19, 1953, in England. Eileen passed away in 1972. He then married Janet (Milne) Monigold on Feb. 14, 1976, in Spokane, Wash.

Dick had worked for the GTE Telephone Company in Wallace, Idaho, for 33 years, before his retirement in 1993.

Dick was a member of the Osburn Lions Club, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Posse, the Good Sam R.V. Club, the Silver Valley Squares and the Square Wheelers. He was also a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Dick loved and enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, square dancing and traveling.

Dick is survived by his wife, Janet Whalen of Kellogg; six children, Pat Whalen of Cataldo, Idaho, Dorothy Sebastian of Jefferson, Ore., Curt and Angie Whalen of North Pole, Alaska, Bret and Kim Monigold of Spokane Valley, Wash., Chet Monigold of Tucson, Ariz., and Colette and David Anthony of Osburn; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eileen; five brothers and sisters; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Monigold; step grandson Daniel Anthony and two great-granddaughters.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg, with Father Jerome Montez serving as celebrant. A reception/luncheon will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following the Mass. Interment will be held at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Inland Northwest Honor Flight, 608 W. Second, St. 309, Spokane, WA 99201-4430.
