David Tyler Cripe, 83

| January 11, 2018 9:56 AM

Dave Cripe died quietly in his sleep early this Christmas morning in Campbell, California, his death the result of complications from ALS against which he had struggled for several years. He and his family, including his five grandchildren, had shared Christmas Eve opening presents.

Dave was born in Kellogg on September 2, 1934, to Dick and Ruby Cripe. Dave and his siblings grew up and were educated there. He graduated from kellogg high School in 1952. He was an honor student, played the trombone in the band, lettered in football, basketball, and track, and was student body president his senior year. Teammates most remember him, however, when he pitched 21 innings for the Kellogg American Legion team before losing to Bonners Ferry.

Dave attended the University of Idaho from which he graduated in 1956 with a degree in Political Science. While at Idaho he pledged the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, was a member of the U of I Debate Team, and pitched for four years for the college baseball team. After graduation he entered the Army with ROTC commission and served two years, mostly in Germany, in military intelligence.

After completing his military service, Dave returned to Kellogg and worked at First Security Bank. One day Howard Andrews, the Superintendent of Schools, came to talk to Dave and asked if he’s like to teach a couple high school classes in History and Government to fill and unexpected vacancy. Sso began Dave’s career as a Social Science teacher. After several years teaching in Kellogg he entered and completed a Master’s Degree program in Education at the University of Oregon. In 1963 he began teaching at Westmont High School in Campbell, CA where he remained until his retirement in 1996. During that time he also assisted in coaching basketball, track, and golf. In addition, he spent several years on the board on the Campbell Department of Parks and Recreation.

In 1968 he married JoAnne Casey of Chula Vista, CA. The couple continued to live in Campbell where they raised their three children - Sara, Tyler, and Casey. Dave was an avid golfer throughout his life as well as a sports fan, especially for Idaho, Oregon and San Francisco teams. His memory for sports trivia was unrivaled. He also loved the out-of-doors and took his family hiking, camping, and fishing. He remained closely tied to Kellogg and often brought his family here on vacation. He kept in contact regularly with many of his high school friends. He was raconteur and combined his outstanding memory with his love of telling stories.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his younger sister, Roslyn Cripe Hampton. His is succeeded by his wife, JoAnne, is daughter, Sara (Chris Coker, and children Kayla, Selden, and Max); Son tyler (Shradha Gavali and children Sonia and Ryan), all of San Jose, CA and son Casey of San Francisco, his brother Richard of Coeur d’Alene, and sister, Carolyn of middleton, Idaho.

The family wished to thank all of the friends who supported Team Great Dave for four years of the Silver Valley Ride to Fight ALS, a fundraising bike ride on the Trail of the Coeur d’Alene from the Snake Pit. Team Great Dave raised just under $10,000 over the four years. To remember Dave, please send donations to the charity of your choice, or to: Golden West Chapter, ALS Association, P.O. Box 565, Agoura Hills, CA 91376.
