Hilmer Edward Johnson, 81

Hilmer Edward Johnson passed away Jan. 4, 2018, in Boise, Idaho, and formerly of Mullan, Idaho.

He was born Jan. 30, 1935, in Annmoose, N.D. Hilmer was the son of Gunner Edward Johnson and Hilda Edna (Huft) Johnson. He grew up in Harvey, N.D. He graduated from Harvey High School in 1954.

On. Nov. 1, 1958, he married Lydia Duchsherer. He worked for the North Dakota highway department for five years. They moved to Climax, Colo., where he worked as a miner. Later, Hilmer moved his family to North Idaho working in the silver mines and mills for the next 20 years. He retired from the Lucky Friday mine. He later retired as an apartment manager after 13 years working in Washington, Idaho and California. Hilmer and Lydia had three children together.

Hilmer enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing chess. He was a member of the National Chess Club and Veterans of Foreign War Post 1675 in Osburn, Idaho. He served as Legislative Chairman for Democrats District 4 in Shoshone County. He also served as vice president and treasurer of Local 5114 USWA in Mullan. He made his retirement home in Boise. He spent his days at the Boise Senior Center. He enjoyed playing chess, pinochle, canasta and having lunch with his many friends. He especially loved playing with his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, Norbert Lane of Mullan; a daughter, Tracy (Lane) Martin and her husband, Greg of Boise; and his son, Ernie Lane and his wife, Catherine of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Sharon Walker Buddenburg and brother-in-law Jay of Mullan; one sister-in-law, Betty Johnson of Post Falls, Idaho: eight grandchildren, Eric Scott of Boise, Jennifer Lane Carroll of Honolulu, Hawaii, Tabitha (Lane) Schaible of Osburn, Elliot Lane and his wife, Maureen of Jacksonville, N.C., Sheena Lane Mende and her husband, Barry of Silverton, Idaho, Hilary Lane of Tacoma, Clint Martin of Boise, and Norbert Lane and his wife, Christina of Mullan; six great-grandchildren, Brandon and Joslynne of Mullan, Dylann and Jace of Boise, Natalynne of Silverton and Ella of Jacksonville.

Hilmer was preceded in death by his father, Gunner Johnson, his mother, Hilda Johnson, his brothers Dallas, Johnson and Gerald Johnson.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at the Morning Club in Mullan.

Memorial donations can be made in Hilmer Johnson’s name to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1675 in Osburn or the Mullan Lutheran Church.
