Hubert ‘Hip’ James Stein, 85

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Hubert “Hip” James Stein, 85, of Post Falls, Idaho (formerly of the Silver Valley), passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Jan. 24, 2018, at his home in Post Falls. He was born Dec. 29, 1932, at the family home on Kellogg Avenue in Kellogg, Idaho. Hip was the son of Edward P. And Valerine (Zoellner) Stein.

Hip attended and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1951. He then attended the University of Idaho serving in the ROTC and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. Hip served in the U.S. Army stationed at the Nevada Atomic Test Site from May 1957 through January 1959.

Hip married Becky Erickson on June 18, 1966, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace.

Hip was co-owner and operator of Steins Brothers IGA from 1959 until his retirement in 1997.

Hip was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg, St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Post Falls, a member of the Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree, the Wallace Elks Lodge No. 331, the Osburn Lions Club, the American Legion Gus Zoellner Post No. 36, a committee member of the Silver Valley Veterans Memorial Fund, a University of Idaho Vandal Booster, a member of the Idaho Retailers Association and in 1997 Hip received the Retailer Of The Year award.

Due to declining health, Hip and Becky moved to Garden Plaza of Post Falls in October 2016.

Hip so loved and enjoyed his family, fishing, golfing, huckleberry picking and was an avid Gonzaga and Notre Dame fan.

Hip is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Becky Stein of Post Falls; two children, Edward P. and Lisa Stein of Eureka, Mont., and Kristina and Saul Stone of Rathdrum, Idaho; four grandchildren, Rebecca Stone, Shannon Stein, Kathryn Stein and Bradley Stein; two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Annie Stone; one brother, Alfred Stein of Silverton, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hip was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles, Gus and William; and four sisters, Monica, June, Gertrude and Edena.

Rosary services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, followed by a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg, with Father Jerome Montez serving as celebrant. A reception/luncheon will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following the memorial Mass. Hip loved bright colors and if you would wish, please wear bright clothing to services.
