MULLAN – There’s a saying in the fire fighting industry that roughly goes, “lets keep it small.”

While it’s usually the big fires that make the news, acknowledging the small ones is important as well because without a quick response from fire crews; the latter can easily evolve into the former.

The Idaho Department Lands reports that on July 15 at approximately 2 p.m., a small forest fire was spotted in the hills roughly 1.5 miles east of Mullan.

Thankfully for first responders, the blaze was spotted in its infancy and dealt with swiftly.

Firefighters from the Mullan Volunteer Fire Department initially responded, then were backed up by personnel from IDL and the United Stated Forest Service who finished the handline and mop up.

The fire burned an estimated .2 acres worth of wilderness before it was extinguished around 5:30 p.m.

The cause is under investigation at this time.

IDL Fire Warden Kjell Truesdell praised the efforts of the responders and their ability to coordinate with one another despite having multiple agencies on scene.
