CATALDO – A mother and her daughters are lucky to be alive after rolling their vehicle and trailer on westbound Interstate 90 Friday afternoon.

According to Danielle Hamilton, the driver of the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado that was pulling the trailer, it was a mixture of wind and mechanical failure that caused the rollover accident.

“I was doing a little over 60 (MPH) as we went to pass the semi, while passing it felt like a gust of wind caught the back of the trailer,” Hamilton recanted. “I attempted to correct the swaying with the trailer brake in the truck and it felt like we were getting back under control when the trailer whipped us back toward the semi and I corrected to not hit the semi as the trailer was still swaying and bouncing which caused both the truck and trailer to roll.”

Hamilton, 45, and her 23 and 7-year-old daughters, were in the truck as it rolled. All three were wearing seat belts at the time, which most likely saved their lives and allowed them to escape the event injury free.

“The police and EMTs were shocked that we all walked away with nothing more than bumps and bruises,” Hamilton said. “They all thought there would be fatalities.”

Hamilton, a 24-year United States Air Force veteran, and her daughters had all of their possessions packed inside the trailer as they were on their way from San Antonio, Texas, (after Hamilton’s USAF retirement) to help her parents in Port Orchard, Wash.

According to Hamilton, the police have ruled the accident as a mechanical defect.

Hamilton and her daughters will see what belongings they can salvage from their trip before continuing on to Port Orchard.

Idaho State Police, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office and Shoshone County Fire District No. 2 responded to the incident.
