MULLAN – Next week is the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s annual Free Fishing Day at select locations across Idaho.

In Shoshone County, anglers can whet their fishing appetite at Lucky Friday Pond near Mullan.

The Free Fishing Day event is one of the many ways that the IDFG is working to get people interested in fishing again.

“Free fishing days are held so that people who may not have a license but may give fishing a try if they can try it without spending money,” Phile Cooper with IDFG said. “People who fished as youngsters but have not for a long time can try it again without the need to buy equipment or a license.”

As Cooper mentioned, if you lack equipment or have never fished before, Idaho Fish and Game will be on hand with loaner fishing rods, tackle, bait and are the events are staffed by experienced anglers that can help.

The event has no age limit and any person, both Idaho resident and non-resident can participate, but the event is definitely geared towards younger anglers who are wanting to learn.

When fishing with young children, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your kid’s first fishing experience isn’t their last. Catching is key, finding a well-stocked pond or lake is essential to hooking youngsters to fishing.

It’s about the number of fish you can catch, not the size, kids will have a lot more fun reeling in several easy-to-catch stocked trout rather than waiting all day for a 5-pound lunker to bite. And finding a local fishing hole has never been easier.

The IDFG has designated several locations as Family Fishing Waters that are choice fishing spots geared toward families and the likelihood of catching fish.

Most are easy to reach, stocked with trout, and accessible by anglers of all ages.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Free Fishing Day is June 9, from 9 a.m. through 12 p.m.
