Mandius C. Lundal, 85

Mandius Charles Lundal passed away Monday, May 28, 2018. Mandius was born in Lead, S.D., on June 1, 1932.

The family moved to Wallace, Idaho when Mandius was 10 years old. He attended elementary and high school in Wallace. He was a carrier for the Spokesman-Review for many of his younger years, earning a trip to Spokane for his dedication. He played football in high school and enjoyed being in the Thespians. He was senior class president at Wallace High School. He graduated from high school in 1949 and over the years attended many reunions. He and his Dad often enjoyed fishing and hunting in the area. He had a lifetime love of the mountains.

Mandius attended the University of Idaho where he pledged Kappa Sigma and was house manager in his senior year. He studied mechanical engineering and graduated in 1954. While in college he worked summers and one semester as a hard rock miner in the area mines and as a lumber jack along the north fork of the Coeur d Alene River.

Following college graduation Mandius went to Milwaukee to work for Allis Chalmers. He then went to Newport, Rhode Island to Officer Candidate School and upon graduation he was commissioned for duty aboard the USS Floyd County LST-762. He was the Engineering Officer aboard ship and enjoyed trips to the Aleutian Islands, Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. He spent three and a half years in the Navy before returning to civilian life.

Mandius worked in San Francisco after his navy career and it was there he met his wife, Sharlene. They were married in Oakland in 1961. Daughters Lisa and Jennifer were born in Oakland. In 1971 the family moved to Idaho where Mandius formed his engineering design company which he operated until 2016. He was respected for his ethics code of doing a job well.

The family enjoyed many camping and skiing trips in the northwest and after the girls left home, he and Sharlene traveled the world hiking and biking their way around. Mandius was a good artist and carpenter and remodeled their home in Spokane. He enjoyed whittling while on camping trips. He enjoyed reading and doing puzzles after retirement, but always had his mind working on design projects.

Mandius is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharlene; daughter Lisa Diekmann; daughter Jennifer Humayun; grandsons Logan Diekmann and Liam Diekmann; granddaughters Ursula Humayun and Selena Humayun; son-in-law Munir Humayun; sister Lile Olson and brother Lee Lundal. He was preceded in death by his parents Mandius and Gladys Lundal; sister Anna Fendler and son-in-law Alex Diekmann.
