Crews respond to Silverton structure fire
SILVERTON — Firefighters with Shoshone County Fire District No. 1 and 2 were rousted from their bunks early Sunday morning when they received a report of a structure fire.
Around 1:14 a.m., SCFD No. 1 was toned out to the Yellowstone area of Silverton. Upon arrival, they found a large garage completely engulfed in flames and a live power line down.
Several popping noises could also be heard coming from the garage. SCFD No. 2 Firefighter/AEMT John Miller said that it is unknown at this time what exactly caused the noises, but garage fires such as this one “are dangerous as you never know what can be stored in there.
With the help of SCFD No. 2, crews immediately set up a defensive perimeter to ensure that the fire did not spread to adjacent homes or structures. While this occurred, personnel with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho State Police evacuated nearby homes for safety.
After a sustained attack, the fire was extinguished with no injuries being reported and damage being contained to the original building.
“We were able to work fast and efficiently to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes and structures,” Miller said. “We are thankful for a good turnout from our volunteers and grateful to our neighbors at District No. 2, along with the law enforcement personnel, for all their help and hard work.”
In addition to two vehicles parked inside, the garage and its contents appear to be a total loss.
The cause and point-of-origin of the blaze are currently under investigation.
