Bayer, Gust headline Wallace state golfers
Earlier this week the Wallace boys golf team and individual Kayla Bayer qualified for next week’s state tournament at Circling Raven Golf Course at the Coeur d’Alene Casino.
The boys finished 15 strokes behind district champs St. Maries, but still had a solid showing that got them into contention for a state title.
Hunter Gust paced the Miners with a third place finish individually, shooting a 88 to lead his team, meanwhile Bayer shot a 107 that was good enough for fourth and a trip to state as an individual.
Coach Marcia Howard and her team are looking forward to competing at the state level, and especially in place so near home.
“Everyone is excited about qualifying as a team to state,” Howard said. “Getting to play on a golf course like Circling Raven is such a great thrill.”
Howard has been diligently working with her team to prepare them for whatever the course and mother nature give them.
“We live in North Idaho so we are accustomed to dealing with the variety of weather experiences,” Howard said. “The players continue to work on their game, especially the short game and adjusting to the challenges of The Raven.”
The Miners used a tough regular season schedule to prepare for state competition, including Bayer who is excited to be representing her community.
“Our young people are accustomed to good competition because of the matches we play during the season,” Howard said. “Kayla is so proud to be at state, a goal she has been working on for four years. She will play it one shot at a time.”
Much like Kellogg, the Wallace program sent their best wishes to their neighbors as they head into competition as well.
“The Wallace golf team is very happy for the Kellogg teams and know that they will be top contenders in both the boys and girls divisions,” Howard said. “Good luck Wildcats!”
The Miners will begin their quest toward state glory on Monday at 9 a.m. at Circling Raven Golf Course.
