WALLACE — The small Silver Valley town that boldly (but confidently) refers to itself as the center of universe takes pride in the fact that they look like a city out of time. The rustic buildings (many of them over 100 years old) really drive this home and give visitors a sense of nostalgia. One of the only ways you could make the town look even more like you stepped through a time machine is by replacing the modern cars on the road with some classic ones.
Well time travelers, classic car enthusiasts and good time seekers rejoice — the Northern Pacific Depot Railroad Museum has got you covered.
This last Saturday was the 33rd annual Depot Day Car Show where classic cars from a variety of bygone decades lined the streets of downtown Wallace. Unlike last year’s event though, Mother Nature was much more kind to the those who came this year. As such, the number of attendees and cars was up.
Director of the NPR Depot Museum Shauna Hillman explained that “people who own that caliber of car don’t bring them out if the weather isn’t nice. And people who like to look at those kinds of cars don’t necessarily wanna freeze their feet off while enjoying them.”
The event had roughly 2,500 people swing by throughout the day to check out the 275 classic cars on display down Sixth and Cedar streets.
Although those numbers are not record-breakers, they are still significant improvements on the 2017 numbers of 1,000 visitors and 222 cars.
Hillman described the event as “highly successful” and commented that this year’s nice weather is usually the norm.
“In those 33 years (that the show has ran), the Depot board of directors that organizes and executes that car show have had more nice days than they have had inclement weather days.”
Those who came out also got to take in some live music and peruse several vendors that had set up in front of the museum.
Results of the car show competition will be published in the Saturday, May 19 print edition of the Shoshone News-Press and will be added to the digital version of this article when they are reported.
