Kit Price Campground closed for the 2018 season
COEUR D’ALENE – Idaho Panhandle National Forests has announced that the Kit Price Campground of the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District will be closed for the 2018 camping season due to hazardous tress and concerns for public safety. Many of the large trees that tower over the site are infected with root diseases which makes them susceptible to other damaging agents, such as insects and other diseases. Trees infected with root diseases are prone to blowing over during wind events, creating hazards and significant safety concerns in developed recreation areas.
“Closing a popular recreation facility is always a difficult decision, but our primary concern in this situation is public health and safety,” District Ranger Dan Scaife said. “In order to provide a reasonably safe and enjoyable recreation experience at Kit Price Campground, additional time is needed to clear campsites of debris, assess conditions, and remove additional hazards.“
Campers with reservations at Kit Price will be notified and issued refunds through the online National Recreation Reservation System at www.recreation.gov. Alternate campgrounds in the vicinity of Kit Price are Devil’s Elbow, Big Hank, and Berlin Flats.
