Seniors at Kellogg, Wallace and Mullan High Schools were raking in the dough this week during their respective scholarship award ceremonies. It is customary every year before graduation that high schools give scholarship presenters the opportunity to recognize the efforts and hard work of their recipients in front of fellow students and family.

These scholarships and their requirements varied from person to person and group to group. While many recognized exceptional scholastic and athletic achievement, other awards were more specific to organizations that the seniors were members of or have made a pledge to join after high school.

Between the three Silver Valley High Schools, over a million dollars in scholarships were awarded to this year’s upcoming graduates.

Leading the pack was Kellogg High School with $1,166,617 spread out among 55 seniors. The ceremony was well attended and Carol Roberts, KHS GEARUP site coordinator and Scholarship assembly master of ceremonies, was pleased with where all that money.

“We are very impressed by the amount of money this year’s senior class was awarded to help with their further education,” she said.“And the monies were spread throughout a large section of the class, which is good to see. The students in this class are destined for great things!”

Roberts also noted that the event was even more outstanding because two students were accepted into military academies.

At Wallace Jr./Sr. High School, a combined $179,000 was given out to some hardworking senior Miners — $98,750 of that money was provided by colleges and $56,550 came from local entities.

WHS principal Chris Lund is sad to see this class go, but is happy that many of them now have a head start because of these funds.

“It was a great testament to the community of Wallace. That amount of money that was given away to our graduating seniors will give them an opportunity to go out and do well for themselves in college or the workforce or a vocational school,” he said. “Everyone in this graduating class are all above and beyond. This is going to be a class that we are going to miss here at Wallace High School. They’ve set the example for classes in the future and they’ve set that expectation pretty high.”

Lastly, Mullan Jr./Sr. High School divided out a total of $60,940 between six seniors and seven past graduates who are still in college. The MHS staff also used the opportunity to announce Jacki Almquist as teacher of the year.

Principal Don Kotschevar couldn’t have been happier with their ceremony and stressed how important the scholarships are to the seniors.

“The students that chose to apply for scholarships got a bundle of money,” he said. “It (the money) gives them an opportunity to get started in life without having debt their first year.”

Kotschevar was also thankful to those who financially supported the awards.

“The people that have endowed money to the Mullan School District have no idea the difference it has made in children’s lives.”

The following are the released amounts awarded at each school’s scholarship ceremony:
