OSBURN – Local fire crews responded to a structure fire on W Yellowstone Ave. Tuesday morning after witnesses called 911 reporting a loud boom and black smoke rising from the affected area.
Personnel from Shoshone County Fire District No. 1 and the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office were the first to arrive to the sight of a garage completely engulfed in flames at approximately 11:17 a.m.
With the help of the wind blowing from west to east, the flames had also stretched to the yard of the neighboring home to the east and destroyed their canvas swimming pool.
Though the wind-fanned flames were unkind to the neighboring pool, yard and fencing– the wind itself did play a factor in the flames not spreading as quickly to the home that was 3-4 feet from the garage.
With the knowledge that the home’s occupants had gotten out safe, fire crews established a defensive perimeter around the two affected structures and began hosing down the area from all sides.
While attempting to quell the main inferno coming from the garage, crews also worked diligently to stop the spread of the fire on the home as much as they could. Both the interior and exterior side of the home facing the garage received significant damage as the flames rose into the rafters and spread from their.
Based on the damage at the scene, it appears as though the fire started in the garage and worked its way out from there.
Hot molten metal could be seen glowing on the ground at the rear of the garage (north side). Crews pulled apart the back of this structure to get at the metal and ensure it did not cause anything else to burn.
Crews from Shoshone County Fire District No. 2 and Mullan Volunteer Fire Department also arrived not long after the initial response teams to assist in fire suppression efforts.
Damage was contained to structures and land that were already affected when crews arrived.
No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
