The City of Kellogg’s Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project continues to move forward.

Phase III, working south of I-90 continues to move East along McKinley Ave. towards Hill Street. By the time this article appears in the paper, Hill Street will have been closed to traffic. The main line sewer crew will continue to the East through the uptown area towards Main Street. Please be patient with all the congestion watch for ever changing detour routes as things move forward. Please continue to support our uptown business district while construction proceeds. Local businesses remain open in this area of town and are eager to serve you. Parking is available to the rear of the Kellogg Elks building on the West end of the business district and if on street parking is full on the East end there is additional parking space available in the Town Square at Main & Idaho St.

Work on Phase II north of I-90 is picking up steam. Crews continue to move East on Mission, Mullan and Riverside Ave. Construction proceeds in six different stages needed to complete the construction process.

First, mainline sewer is installed. This is followed by service crews who finalize connecting your home to the new sewer line. Stage three follows with the installation of mainline water. This is followed by service crews who then complete connecting your home to the new waterline. With the pipe in the ground and all the connections made, stage five can proceed. In stage five, yard restoration, sidewalks, curbing and other concrete work is completed and your street is then restored and graded in anticipation of the sixth and final stage, which is the paving the city right-of-way. The entire process takes several weeks, depending on the problems encountered, and in some cases the crew may need to move to a different area before returning to complete all of the work.

Work on Mission and Mullan Ave. will result in a great deal of congestion and access to parking spots and to homes in the area will be challenging. Please plan ahead, work with your neighbors and construction crews to sort out how best to meet everyone’s needs.

Be safe. Obey road closure signs and drive carefully around and through construction zones. Watch out for pedestrians and especially young children and pets. Remember, operators of heavy equipment may have blind spots that make seeing vehicles and pedestrians difficult so give them lots of room to maneuver. Please be patient with all that is going on and don’t be afraid to say thank you to those who are working hard under difficult conditions to make all of this happen.

Parents are asked to remind children to avoid active construction zones and to not play on material piles that are placed throughout the neighborhood.

When the Kellogg swimming pool opens for the 2018 summer season, access will again be free of charge while the sewer project is underway.
