KELLOGG — As in years past, Silver Valley schools will once again be holding events to honor those who have served our nation in the armed forces.

Kellogg High School will be hosting its special assembly for Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 9 at 10:45 a.m.

The assembly is being put on by the KHS leadership class, who wanted to make sure that local veterans get the recognition they deserve from the locals, despite the holiday occurring over the weekend.

“There is a lot of history regarding veterans at our school,” leadership student Archie Rauenhorst said. “We have multiple pictures and paintings regarding the World War II veterans that have gone to the school, or lived in Kellogg. People like Frank Reasnor, who has a story of brotherhood and heroism, need to be recognized. It’s not that it has to be as big as sacrificing your life for your unit, but just being in your unit and defending your country, so that you can come home every day to a safe family.”

Rauenhorst is personally attached to Veterans Day, which is why he wants to make sure that the school hosted an event, even though there are other celebrations on the actual holiday itself.

“I know that we have the memorial in the Kellogg Public Park and both of my grandpas and my multiple great-grandpas are on that memorial. That’s why it is important to me,” Rauenhorst said. “I know that many other students and teachers would tell you the exact same thing. Our goal as the leadership class, was to have them all be honored.”

Wallace High School is also inviting all local veterans to an assembly that is open to the public at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 9.

The Kellogg High School Marine Corps JROTC will be at both assemblies, as well as on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Mountain Valley of Cascadia nursing home in Kellogg.

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, there will be a public ceremony at the Kellogg Veteran’s Memorial in Kellogg City Park at 11 a.m.
