WALLACE — Earlier this month Wallace Jr/Sr High School hosted a special raffle during their boys preseason basketball jamboree.

Over the last several months some of the local, small school districts in North Idaho including Mullan, Kellogg, and Wallace have been selling raffle tickets for a 2018 Volkswagen Beetle.

The car was donated for the fundraiser by Post Falls Volkswagen at no cost to the schools, which has allowed 100 percent of the fundraiser proceeds to stay with the schools.

According to WHS athletic director Bruce Bailey, more than 3,800 tickets were sold.

At $10 a ticket that means the schools raised more than $38,000.

The schools worked as independent contractors for the fundraiser as well, so whereas more than $38,000 was raised, each school was able keep 100 percent of the proceeds of their own ticket sales.

Silver Valley residents Rusty and Judy Shephard won the drawing on Nov. 17, and are now proud owners of a Volkswagen Beetle.

“I was thrilled to hear that the winner of the VW car was from our area,” Bailey said. “Rusty and Judy have always been big supporters to our schools and communities. I can’t wait to see Rusty driving down the road in a convertible VW bug with the top down and his hair blowing in the wind.”

Bailey was thrilled with the entire day and was thankful for the impressive turnout for the jamboree event.

“Anytime Wallace can host an 8-team basketball jamboree and raffle off a car at the same time is exciting. This year the games were even more competitive than last year,” Bailey said. “This doesn’t happen very often. It was a great turnout and we would all like to thank Herb, Kathy and Jonah at Post Falls Volkswagen for their generous donation. Their generous donation helped schools raise over $38,000 this year, putting the grand total over the two years at approximately $75,000. Thank you to everyone who purchased car raffle tickets and supported this fundraiser. We all truly appreciate it. The money raised will help all of our students with so many things.”

The money can be used by the schools at their discretion with a preference toward extracurricular activities.
