MULLAN — Sometimes all you need is a little health and you’re back in the mix.
At least that’s what worked for the Mullan/St. Regis Tigers when they trounced Lakeside 86-6 last Friday on homecoming.
It takes skill to score 86 points in a football game, but it takes talent to only allow the other team to score 6 during the entire game.
The Tigers had been dealing with some lingering injuries, but managed to take those injuries and find ways to make them work for their biggest win of the season.
“This was a total team effort. We have a lot of unselfish guys on this squad,” coach Stetson Spooner said. “There’s no complaining or ‘I want the ball’ crap or anything. We had an all-state wide receiver in Skye Gallaway who willingly was ready to go at guard and didn’t complain about not getting a touch once. It's about the team with this crew. At full strength and 11 players instead of last two games playing with nine we are a very talented and dangerous squad.”
And he is right.
Last week with only seven healthy players, the Tigers competed with arguably the best team in Idaho at their size and played the game seven on eight for much of it.
“Honestly if people thought us hanging 40 points on Kendrick playing with seven guys wasn't legit I can tell you it was,” Spooner said. “They played with eight guys every down of that game.”
Mullan spread the ball all over the place as six players found the end zone, but once again freshman quarterback Luke Trogden showed just how dangerous a player he was with four total touchdowns and only one of them coming through the air.
Mullan (2-3) will get a week off before hosting Kootenai on Oct. 12, in a game that has potential state playoff implications riding heavily on it.
Volleyball
Genesis Prep d. Mullan: The Jaguars made quick work of the Tigers on Sept. 25 at the Mullan Pavilion (25-16, 25-12, 25-10). No further information was obtained.
Wallace High School
Volleyball
Lakeside d. Wallace: Glory Olson had eight kills and five aces for the Knights in a 10-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-20 North Star League win against the Miners at Kirby Krulitz Court. Olson served 10 consecutive points for Lakeside in the third set.
Wallace d. Kootenai: The visiting Miners improved to 4-2 in the North Star League, sweeping the Warriors 25-18, 25-11, 25-10 on Sept. 27.
Amanda Wine had six kills and two blocks for Kootenai (2-8, 1-5 NSL). Hannah Andersen had two kills, three blocks and six service points, Tayva Maitland two kills and six service points, Bella Defoort six service points.
Football
Kamiah 62, Wallace 12: The Miners struggled on the road as the Kubs thumped them in a Whitepine League contest on Friday, Sept. 28. The Miners are 1-3 and 0-3 in the WPL.
Wallace will travel to Troy this week to take on the Trojans in another WPL contest at 6 p.m.
Kellogg High School
Volleyball
St. Maries d. Kellogg: Kaci Haeg had six kills for the Lumberjacks in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 non league win over the Wildcats at Andrews Gymnasium on Sept. 25. No further information was obtained.
Bonners Ferry d. Kellogg: The host Wildcats couldn’t beat the Badgers for the second consecutive time, but instead were swept by their Intermountain League rivals (25-23, 25-13, 25-16) on Sept. 27.
Cierra Brandt and Kat Rauenhorst led the Wildcats 8 and 6 kills respectively.
Soccer
Timberlake 3, Kellogg 0: The Wildcats were blanked by the host Tigers in their final regular season meeting on Monday, Sept. 24 — a makeup game for a contest originally scheduled in August. No further stats were obtained.
St. Maries 2, Kellogg 1: Visiting Kellogg put up a fight and kept things close on Sept. 27, but couldn’t tie things up late against the Lumberjacks.
The Wildcats will host Priest River tonight at 4 p.m. in their final regular season match.
Football
Grangeville 28, Kellogg 6: The host Wildcats were no match for the best 2A team in the state as they fell to the Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 28, to become 1-4 on the season.
The Wildcats had a few moments where they looked poised and aggressive against Grangeville, but couldn’t sustain any momentum and ultimately it cost them.
Kellogg will host Bonners Ferry this Friday at 7 p.m. for homecoming and will open up their Intermountain League schedule as they look to make a run at a second consecutive state playoff berth.
