Kellogg uses match as learning experience

KELLOGG –– It was tough outing for the Wildcats ladies soccer squad earlier this week when they dropped an Intermountain League tilt to Timberlake 5-0.

The Wildcats began the game as the aggressors, doing a terrific job of keeping the ball on the Tigers half of the field, but midway through the first half the Tigers finally broke through and nabbed a 2-0 halftime lead.

Kellogg didn’t allow their deficit to get them down, but they also took some chances to get back into the game that ended up costing them in the end.

Timberlake would go on to score three more times before the final horn sounded.

“This week we worked on being more physical and aggressive and I think it showed today,” coach Craig Petersen said. “We can’t keep letting Shea (Curran, Kellogg’s goalkeeper) be the only one keeping us in games.”

Petersen went deep into his bench to give more of his girls experience against one of the State’s best programs, something he believes will be beneficial later in the season.

“We rotated in some of our players who haven’t gotten a lot of minutes so far,” Petersen said. “We could have kept this a 3-0 game, but taking some chances and getting that experience will help us a few months from now when districts roll around.”

Kellogg (1-2) will have a few days off before hosting St. Maries next Thursday at Teeters Field at 5 p.m.
