Volleyball
WALLACE — The Kellogg Wildcats held serve over the Wallace Miners as they quickly dispatched their Silver Valley foes in three sets (26-24, 25-6, and 25-13) on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Kirby Krulitz Court.
The Wildcats struggled out of the gate as the Miners fed off the home crowd energy, but Kellogg would rally late and pull off the win in the first set.
The way the first set ended seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match as the Wildcats only allowed 19 points over the next two sets on their way to the big win.
Wildcat freshman Grace Nearing set the tone from the Wildcats, especially in set two when she opened the game up from the service line with 11 straight points.
“Grace was big for us tonight,” coach Stephanie Brunner said following the win. “She and Shaylynn Durham played very well for us tonight.”
The Wildcats were looking for their first win of the season and they got it in a match where they addressed several of the areas where they were struggling.
“We tried to do a lot of things that we had been working on, especially some of our specialty sets,” Brunner said. “We hit better than we have, we are getting there, but we still have a long way to go. We need to start really trusting each other.”

Clearwater Valley 62, Wallace 8: The Miners lost their Whitepine League opener on Friday, Sept. 7, in Kooskia, while the Rams improved to 2-0 with a convincing 62-8 win at home against Wallace. Clearwater Valley running back Lane Schilling rushing for 235 yards and six touchdowns, Rams linebacker Ty Dominguez tallying four sacks.
Wallace (1-1) hosts Kootenai this week for homecoming.

Timberlake 5, Kellogg 0: It was tough outing for the host Wildcats as they dropped an Intermountain League tilt to Timberlake on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
The Wildcats began the game as the aggressors, doing a terrific job of keeping the ball on the Tigers’ half of the field, but midway through the first half the Tigers finally broke through and nabbed a 2-0 halftime lead.
Kellogg didn’t allow their deficit to get them down, but they also took some chances to get back into the game that ended up costing them in the end. Timberlake would go on to score three more times before the final horn sounded.
“This week we worked on being more physical and aggressive and I think it showed today,” coach Craig Petersen said. “We can’t keep letting Shea (Curran, Kellogg’s goalkeeper) be the only one keeping us in games.”
Petersen went deep into his bench to give more of his girls experience against one of the state’s best programs, something he believes will be beneficial later in the season.
“We rotated in some of our players who haven’t gotten a lot of minutes so far,” Petersen said. “We could have kept this a 3-0 game, but taking some chances and getting that experience will help us a few months from now when districts roll around.”
Football
Orofino 42, Kellogg 12: The host Maniacs won Friday night, Sept. 7, behind the 131 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Marc Taitano and 236 passing yards on just five completions for quarterback Aurelio Morales.
Orofino had only scored 12 points combined in their first two games before erupting against the Wildcats. who lost their best lineman Owen Seatz earlier in the week to personal issues.
The Wildcats (1-2) will have the week off to prepare for their next game against Asotin on Sept. 21.
