WHS 3-on-3 fundraiser to benefit Parsons
WALLACE — The Wallace Jr./Sr. High School Student Council are taking their community’s love of hoops and using it to help one of their own.
Ethan Parsons, a senior at WHS, was recently diagnosed with Chiari Malformation along with a cyst on his brain that has burst and turned into a benign mass, as well as a herniated C1 in his spinal cord.
The WHS Student Council has organized a 3-on-3 basketball tournament where all of the proceeds will go to Parsons.
The idea came while Student Council President John Webb was at Student Council State in Boise, along with senior class president Maggie Howard.
“We were going to a bunch of roundtable-type meetings to come up with ideas and Make-A-Wish Idaho was there and we sat in on a roundtable with them,” Webb said. “After that we were both like, ‘why haven’t we done something for Ethan yet?’ and it just kind of hit us. I mean he’s in our class and had this issue for a while now. When we got back, it was the first thing we did, was get going on this.”
Basketball in the Silver Valley is tremendously popular and 3-on-3 tournaments are a simple way to get folks playing and an easy way to raise money.
The Student Council has also coordinated with another group to make sure there will be food at the event, as well as to make sure there are other activities for families to take advantage of while they’re waiting for or watching games.
Webb and the Student Council are hoping that local businesses will get in on the action and sponsor teams, or the event itself.
Acting sponsors will have their logo printed on the shirts that each tournament player receives.
“We thought it would be really cool if the local businesses sponsored teams, or just donated to the event,” Webb said. “It would be awesome to see the community support this event.”
The tournament will have men’s, women’s and co-ed divisions, for players high school aged and up to adult.
The Play For Parsons 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is scheduled for May 4, beginning at 10 a.m. at WHS, the deadline for team registration and sponsorship is April 29 and can be done at WHS.
Team registration is $75 and sponsorship packages begin at $50.
