- Report of a dog stuck under a porch at the 400 block of Mullan Avenue. After crawling under the house and chasing the dog down the street, the lost dog was successfully returned to its owner. Special Kudos to Sgt. Twidt for getting muddy under the house. Take that firefighters (This was Probie’s brief about the “dog under the house call.” Below is how I remember it).
- So, it’s near the end of my shift and Probie gets this call of a dog stuck under a porch. Probie and K74 head down to the house and I did as well because I have a catch pole in my patrol vehicle and it sounded like a good way to end my shift. We all arrive and I could hear the familiar bark of a wiener dog. Knowing wiener dogs like I do, I know that this little badger dog is not going to come out easily — no one is going to able to get close to it, it’s just going to bark at us while staying just out of reach. Someone is going to have to go under the house to get it. I look at Probie thinking “well he was a fireman and that’s what they do right, save cats and stuff.” Well, I guess they only save cats in trees, not dogs under houses. I took off my duty belt, and with catch pole in hand, crawled under the house. Well, they might call it a crawl space but yeah, no room to crawl here. I’m stuck sliding around in the dirt on my stomach all the while the ungrateful little hot dog with legs would just bark at me while keeping just out of reach of my catch pole. From outside, I might have sounded like the dad in the “Christmas Story” when he goes down stairs to fix the furnace. Eventually, I was able to get the little barking bundle of joy close to the opening of the crawl space. I gave it a little goose with the catch pole and off he went right out the opening. I yell “grab it!” Probie’s response was “the dog?” At that point, I might have yelled at Probie. On a positive note. Probie was able to chase the little sausage dog back to his home. I guess the little Teckel had been missing for a day or two. (In all fairness, Probie would have gone under the house to save the dog, but it was the end of my shift and he was just starting his, so no need to destroy his uniform right off the bat.)
