Gary Hiatt

| April 15, 2019 10:37 AM

Gary Hiatt was born September 27, 1957, in Wallace Idaho. He joined his parents, Earl and Roberta Hiatt, and sister, Theresa (Terry). They became long- time residents of Mullan. Despite their age difference, Terry and Gary were extremely close.

Gary would often relate stories of his childhood, and the misadventures of his youth. During one such adventure, he was involved in a serious car wreck, and was nearly paralyzed. He had a lengthy hospital stay. Gary suffered from life- time back pain due to that accident. While recuperating, he met a candy- striper named Beth Cross. He and Beth married soon after. During the course of the marriage, Gary worked core- drilling, and they became parents to Jason Trevor . Gary always made room in his home for family members, or someone down on their luck. It became a pattern Gary continued throughout his life. Gary and Beth divorced shortly after the birth of Elise Amber.

He drifted for awhile, but always came back home to Mullan. After Earl passed away, Gary stayed with his mother, Roberta , and they relocated to Wallace. Gary became familiar in the building trade, having a dedication to perfection. He and Vern Benz formed a working relationship, and remodelled homes throughout the Silver Valley. Polla’s Exxon in Mullan was their proudest accomplishment .

In the meanwhile, Gary reconnected with Rebecca Williams, a friend from his youth. She was ending a long term marriage, and had two children of her own, John and Angela Sutton. They engaged in a relationship , that evolved into a long lasting marriage. The first years of the marriage were chaotic and wonderful. The Hiatts move into a small apartment , and were soon blessed with Jacob Evan. Despite the cramped quarters , and plenty of kids, Gary and Beccy opened heart and home.

Gary was employed at several businesses after Vern Benz retired. He worked as a desk clerk and head of housekeeping at the Brooks Hotel in Wallace. He was also employed at NAPA Auto parts. Later Gary became an employee at Dave Smith’ s where he remained until his passing.

Gary collected many friends throughout his life. He was generous, and quick to laugh. He loved to help his family and friends. He was an all- round good guy, with an old-fashioned integrity. And he loved his family without judgement.

Gary passed away peacefully on March 25, 2019 surrounded by his family at Sacred Heart Hospital, at 8:00 pm (his bed-time).

Gary was predeceased by his father Earl Hiatt, his mother Roberta Hiatt, his sister Theresa Adamson, and grandson, Jeremy (J.J) Smith.

Gary is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Beccy) Hiatt, Jason Hiatt, Elise (Jeremy)Smith, Jacob (Haley) Hiatt, Angela (Trevor Christman) Sutton, John (Lisa)Sutton. He also leaves behind grandchildren: Alexus, Becca, Katie, Dean, Jack, Abel, Everly and Hunter, Harper and a great- grandson, Austin.
