Northwest Cup continues to grow at Silver Mountain
KELLOGG — Last weekend Silver Mountain played host once again to the Northwest Cup.
The Northwest Cup is one of the nation’s premier downhill mountain bike race series and has consistently grown over the years.
This year more than 280 racers ascended the mountain on the gondola to throw down their best course times in hot and dusty trail conditions.
This year there were four different race categories based on ability, with each one having age divisions.
With riders as young as 4 to over 50, there were plenty of competitors for spectators to cheer on.
“This stop on the Northwest Cup circuit has turned into a crowd favorite among the racers and spectators alike,” said Gus Colburn, Silver Mountain marketing manager. “Our resort is very mountain-bike and family friendly, and our trail crew and bike patrol put a ton of work into our mountain to make it great. Scott Tucker and Casey Northern, the race coordinators, have done a great job of building this series from the ground up and getting people excited about racing in the Pacific Northwest.”
Two members of Silver Mountain’s trail crew ended up on the podiums, as Morgan Winchester and Aidan Latham both took second in their respective categories.
Frank Culhno, a local pro and consistent presence in our bike park, took 4th place in the professional category.
Silver Mountain was added to the Northwest Cup in 2015, and over the last few years with various additions and improvements to their mountain trail system has become one of the premier stops on the race circuit.
The next races to take place at Silver will be Silveroxx on Sept. 20-22, which will have races, challenges and activities for all ages and abilities.
