CATALDO – As of Dec. 4, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes Recreational Trailway is now open for use with Class I and Class II Electric Assist Bicycles.

Working through the process to permit these changes involved the partner agencies that cooperatively manage the Trail, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Class I and Class II Electric Bicycles as defined below are now permitted without restriction for use on the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes:

•Class I Electric Bicycles, which provide motor assistance only while the rider is pedaling, with assistance ceasing once the bicycle reaches 20 mph.

•Class II Electric Bicycles, which provide motor assistance whether or not the ride is pedaling, with assistance ceasing once the bicycle reaches 20 mph.

•Class III Electric Bicycle restrictions remain in effect and their use on the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is prohibited.

The amendment to the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes General Management Principles and Guidelines is based upon the definitions within HB 76 passed earlier this year by the Idaho State Legislature.

The final steps were completed by the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes Trail Commission and approved by both the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Park Board.

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and the Trail Commission are excited to make this amendment to provide additional opportunities to all trail users to enjoy the experience offered by the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes.
